• i
~~\ United States Soii 230 W. 16th Street
' p '1 Department of Conservation
~~~~ Agriculture Service Salida, CO 81201
March 30, 1984
Pridemore Construction, Inc.
29075 County Road 331
Buena Vista, CO 81211
Dear Mr. Pridemore,
Enclosed is the information you requested for reclamation planning on
the Jesse Lee Placer. In addition to the enclosed information, I have a few
additional comments and suggestions on your planned operation.
Your planned, post mining use of this area for wildlife (specifically
fisheries) is a good choice and should be very compatable with your mining
operation. With removal of aggregate, in addition to oold recovery, excavated
ponds can be easily developed. A well planned mining operation can go a long
way towards minimizing disturbances and reclamation costs. I sug4est that the
ponds be created primarily thru excavation rather than building embankments.
I fear that the soils materials will be inadequate for an earthen embankment
of any size. Additionally, if water is impounded behind an earth dam, a orin-
ciple spillway (pipe and riser) would be needed.
Numerous springs and seeps occur on the site. Two well defined channels
outlet much of this water to the Arkansas P.iver. As you have already noted,
this water will need to be routed around your mininn activities to avoid sedi-
mentation in the River.
I support your decision to maintain a "buffer" strio between your mining
activities and the Arkansas River and Maxwell Creek. This eliminates any pro-
blems with channel and streambank stability and minimizes the visual impacts
of your operation.
Please contact me if I can be of further assistance.
Sincerely,
~r ~
~J ea L, ~c/L.LL-~' ~-
Bob Schroeder
District Conservationist
SCS - Salida, CO
cc:Randall Champion
Wright Engineering
O Tne Soil Conservation Sern ce SCS-AS-1
U is an agency of Ine
Department of 4gric ult ure 10-7g
