RE: Review of Notice of Intent to Explore, Cottonwood Land Company
Dear Mr. Tifft;
I have reviewed your application for a Notice of Intent (NOI) to
explore for coal in an area approximately to miles southwest of the
town of Hayden, Colorado. I have been asked to make specific
comments and recommendations in regards to wildlife issues and
concerns.
According to Division of Wildlife records there is no critical
habitat within the area of exploration for any listed State or
Federal threatened or endangered species.
There are at least two active lek sites for Columbian Sharp-Tailed
Grouse within one to two miles of drill locations specified as
sites "F" and "G" on the Exploration Drilling Map 1 submitted with
your application. Columbian Sharp-Tailed Grouse are listed by the
United States Fish and Wildlife Service as a category 2 specie.
While sites "F" and "G" are within potential nesting distance from
an active lek site for this specie they are not characteristic of
normal nesting habitat. Sites "A", "B", and "C" are located in
more typical nesting habitat however no active lek sites are
located within an expected nesting distance of those locations.
Based on available information I do not expect the activities
outlined in your application to result in any negative impacts to
this specie.
There is a historic lek site for Sage Grouse within two miles of
the drill location specified as location "E" on the Exploration.
