. 2.04.7(1) Groundwater Information relating to
the Tow Creek Sandstone
The base of the Iles formation is generally defined
as the bottom of the Tow Creek sandstone. The Tow Creek '
sandstone is a light brown, fine grained, well sorted
sandstone that is cemented with calcite. This rock ranges
from 35 to 125 ft thick, and is a cliff-forming bed in
areas outlying our permit area. The deepest member
encountered by Sunland's drilling is a sandstone which
overlays the Tow Creek by a considerable distance. This
sandstone (and the Iles formation of which it is a part)
is underlain by the Tow Creek Sandstone and the Mancos
Shale,
Neither this unnamed sandstone nor (obviously) the
underlying Tow Creek sandstone outcrops anywhere on
Sunland's permit area. The entire Sunland permit area
is located in a graben of approximately 10,000 ft in width
which is transcected by the Trout Creek canyon very nearly
on the strike of the down-thrown block. This graben is
defined by two large (+200') displacement faults. The up-
stream (southwest) fault produces a conspicuous escarpment
and cross-canyon where it interscects the Trout Creek canyon _
approximately 7,000 ft up-stream of the Apex No. 2 mine.
The down-stream (northeast) fault is evidenced by Rattlesnake
• Butte, and is clearly visible in the Trout Creek sandstone
outcrop along the north canyon wall of Middle Creek. The
Apex No. 2 mine is approximately 3000 ft up-stream from this
fault. The Tow Creek sandstone does not outcrop anywhere
downstream of the southwest edge of this graben. In other
words, the nearest possible outcrop of the Tow Creek
sandstone is over 7,000 ft UP-stream from our mining
operation.
The following information represents data generated by
cottelating the separation distance (of 260') of the lower
pinnacle seam to the deepest sandstone intercepted by
Sunland's drilling. Please refer to map Exhibit "C" for
drill hole locations.
Rev 05/05/81

~+.
