- 3 -
the Reference Area, which proved to have a rather homogeneous
flora, but was not attained after 50 samples in each affected
type. The great heterogeneity in herbaceous ground cover in
those types is due to the high percentage of canopy cover,
contributing to areas of very high and very low ground cover.
The reference area proved to have herbaceous plant
production intermediate between the two affected types. Cover
is much higher on the reference area. None-the-less, the
selected reference area is rather typical of grasslands in the
vicinity of the disposal area, and is expected to be
representative of conditions which should results from proper
reclamation practices on the tailings disposal area, when
subsequently subjected to typical stocking rates for livestock
in the area.
