Evaluation
• It possesses the potential to add significant information for our
understanding of past lifeways. It is considered eligible for inclusion to
the National Register of Historic Places, as previously suggested by SHPO.
5GF742
This site is probably a Ute pictograph site (post Spanish contact) located on
the SSW cliff face of the north side of Munger Canyon. The panel consists of
three figures: a rider on horseback, a buffalo, and a line drawing (however,
the later 1983 report reports only two figures).
Recent erosion revealed a mano and a possible metate fragment noted during the
1983 survey.
Evaluation
This site is significant in that it may offer an opportunity to examine
cultural sequences stratigraphically. 5GF742 is recommended as eligible for
the National Register of Historic Places, especially in light of its close
proximity to 5GF1147.
SGF143
This historic ranching site is located at the mouth of Munger Canyon. It
consists of three dug-out structures, a cistern, outhouse, chicken house,
barn, log structure and corral. The complex was established ca. 1917 and was
• used until the early 1950's (p.c. Mrs. Hitchborn). Artifactual material
consists of rusted tin and broken glass, one piece of which was amethyst.
This site is located on private land.
Evaluation
This site is not a unique representation of ranching activities in the area.
It is not considered to be eligible for inclusion to the National Register of
Historic Places, as assessed previously by the SHPO (May 1982).
5GF326
Is erroneously described as a possible dry land sandstone cist of prehistoric
origin. Ao artifactual material was located in or ad,)acent to the structure.
This feature 1s actually a documented 1/4, 1/4 survey monument fora N/S line
of Section 32, T.7S., R.102W., Howard Canyon 7.5 quadrangle. This feature
will be avoided by construction and no further consideration of cultural
values is necessary.
S
•
