STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Deliver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (303) 866-3567
FA)t: (303) 832-8106
July 9, 2004 `~
Mr. Eric Reckentine
Lafarge West, Inc.
1400 West 64"' Ave.
Denver, CO 80221
//
RE: Lafazge West, Inc., Application No. M-2003-091
Duckworth Pit; Adequacy Review #2
Deaz Mr. Reckentine,
COLORADO
DIVISION O F
MINERALS
GEOLOGY
REC LAMATION•NINING
EAFETY•SCIENCE
Bill Owens
Governor
Russell George
Faetu[ive Director
Ronald W. Gattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Tnstee
The Division received Lafarge's adequacy response on June 30, 2004 for the Duckworth Pit New
112 Application, File Number M-2003-091. The Division of Minerals and Geology (Division) is
required to make an approval or denial recommendation no later than July 26, 2004, therefore,
your response to the following adequacy review concerns should be submitted to the Division as
soon as possible.
Rule 6.4.4 Exhibit D- Mining Plan
1. The Division previously questioned storm water runoff drainage that will be detained in the
adjacent Cottonwood Pit in the following statement:
"Lafarge states that "sediment generated from localized stormwater runoff and disturbed
drainage will be detained in the ponds already existing at the previously permitted
Cottonwood pit (M--1988-042). " Please further describe how the water will be routed
towards the Cottonwood ponds and provide designs of the predicted flow and structures that
will be used to facilitate this runoff. In addition, Lafarge will be required to revise the
mining and reclamation permit of the Cottonwood pit to account for this additional runoff. "
Lafazge responded by enclosing the Storm Water Management Plan for the Duckworth Pit.
The Division was unable to determine from this plan how the adjacent Cottonwood Pit would
handle storm water runoff from the Duckworth Pit. Please clarify this issue and address
accordingly.
2. As previously stated, Lafarge proposes to mine through and relocate the Smith and Emmons
Ditch. Lafazge has not submitted a notarized agreement between Lafazge and the owner of
the Smith and Emmons Ditch to mine through and relocate the structure. Until such
agreement is submitted and approved by the Division, Lafazge will need to revise all maps to
reflect the approved mining off- set distance from the Smith. and Emmons Ditch. If such
notarized agreements cannot be achieved during this review period, then a revision to the
permit will need to be filed in the future prior to mining closer than the approved mining off-
set distance.
Office of Office of Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Active and Inactive Mines Geological Survey
