• the characteristics of the material that the channel is constructed on. In practice, the
response of a given channel may change between storms and even during storms. Where
for one runoff regime the channel may experience deposition for another it may
experience erosion. Such responses are a natural expression of the dynamic nature of the
hydrologic system.
In general, the following channel protective measures will be implemented based on
channel slope. It must be pointed out that due to the extent of variables involved that
some `field fitting' is expected. In sections where larger flows are expected additional
protection may be warranted.
Slope
0-7% Potential deposition area. Channel protection to be added if erosional
problems area encountered.
>7-12% Rock checks, concrete sack checks, sandbag checks, or coarse refuse
armoring (rotary breaker reject).
>12% Coarse refuse armoring, angular riprap, shotcrete channels, half pipe
channels, full culvert/pipe slope drains.
