Rick Sherman
Wildlife Biologist
March 2, 1994
Page -3-
As was mentioned, the operation will be situated on the terrace, which is 30 to
40 feet above the river valley and 1400 feet away from the Uncompahgre River.
This situation will provide a considerable buffer for the wildlife using the
riparian area. In addition, operations at the site will occur on an intermittent
basis, primarily during warmer seasons.
Of particular concern to you is the bald eagle, which, according to your letter
extensively uses the river corridor during the winter. We concur that the
welfare of the eagles must be considered, however, we believe that our operation
will not be disruptive to their normal routine along the river corridor given the
buffer that exists. This is especially true since the eagles frequent the area
during the winter, which is the period that our operation will most likely be
inactive. We have conducted an investigation of the surrounding area to
determine if there are any eagle nests along the river corridor in relatively
close proximity to the subject site, and have found none.
I trust that your concerns have been addressed. If you have further questions
regarding our proposal, please call me at (303) 243-4900.
Sincerely,
UNITED COMPANIES OF MESA COUNTY, INC.
Paul E.
