Based upon our understanding oPthe mining plan, the limited size
of the operation--under an acre--will keep surface drainage and runoff
problems to a minimum. However, a pit 150' X 100' X 50' deep will
presumably catch enough surface rain/snow to require some type of
process, however minor, to drain or dry up the working area if public
access to the pit is planned. If the public is restricted to the piles
of removed material as specified in the operator's plan, then this
wetness wouldn't be a big problem for the heavy equipment used in the
operation.
2. Since the operation is planned to last up to a period of. 5 years,
recommend that any large scale spoil files be planted to an erosion
resistant vegetative cover if left in place for longer than 1 year.
3. Two comments on the planned grass mixture to be used to reclaim
the disturbed area upon cessation of mining, 1. V~estern Wheatgrass and
Arizona fescue seed are fairly expensive and/or in very limited supply
at times--substituting Sheep fescue (Var. CO VAR) and either Pubescent(LUNA)
or Slender Wheatgrass usually results in a successful stand of grass
locally at a reasonable cost. And 2., Smooth bromegrass is our most
successful species of grass for local high altitude conditions and soils
so it is highly recommended even though it is not a native grass. If
native grasses alone are used, they may take much longer to establish
an adequate erosion control cover as compared to adapted/introduced
species. Replanting costs should not exceed the projected $500.00 amount.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this proposed operation.
P en , ~, o upervisors resource ons.,
R~.~ T F~o~ew
YOUq DI6TRICT I6 YOUR NEIO LABOR IN CON6ER VIITION
