• (Melilotus officinalis), alfalfa (Medicago sp.), crested wheatgrass (Agropyron
cristata), fescues and other wheatgrasses. Depending on success, cover ranged
from 0 to 75 percent, and productivity ranged from 100 to 3500 pounds per acre.
Average figures for cover and productivity would be approximately 30 percent and
1400 pounds per acre.
General Observations
The productivity estimates given for native plant communities in the pre-
ceding paragraphs are based primarily on an extrapolation of standard SCS esti-
mates for relatively similar conditions in various recognized range sites.
Observations on the site and measured data in nearby areas suggest that these
estimated ranges may be too high for local conditions. Measurements of produc-
tivity in sagebrush-grassland and mountain brush communities a few miles west of
. this site in 1976 indicated no native communities were producing more than 500
pounds per acre. From extrapolation of these measured data and observations on
site, these observers estimate that local productivity would likely average
about 30 to 60 percent of the corresponding SCS estimates.
Backfilled Mine Area - Monitoring
Currently, Sun Coal Company is monitoring revegetation success for the
backfilled area in accordance with an approved CMLRD plan. Detailed aspects of
the revegetation monitoring plan are presented in Section 2.05.4.
Endangered Species
A review of federally listed endangered plant species and a check of spe-
ties observed in the permit area was made to determine if any endangered plant
species are known to occur at the Meadows No. 1 mine. None of the species
. listed in the attached species list qualify as "endangered."
- 131 - (Rev. 5/86)
