Box 638
Paonia, Colorado 81428
Attention: Mr. Art Beavers
OMB~o ~90e a & Geo
D9Y
April 20, 2000
PN: M00079GE
Subject: Geotechnical Engineering Field Study and
Laboratory Study for the
Proposed Gravel Quarry Site near
Austin, Colorado
Mr. Beavers:
This letter presents the results of our March 30 through April
20, 2000 geotechnical engineering field and laboratory studies for
your proposed gravel quarry project.
The field study consisted of observing, describing and sampling
the soil materials encountered in five (5) track hoe excavated test
holes at the proposed gravel quarry site. The approximate
locations of the test holes are shown on Figure 1. The logs
describing the soils encountered in the test holes are presented on
Figures 2 through 9.
At the time of our field study the site was vacant. The proposed
quarry site is located on the crest of a small knoll which slopes
down in all directions near the perimeter of the proposed quarry.
The shallow soil materials encountered in the test holes
consisted generally of clayey sand to sandy clay material to a
depth of about four (4) to ten (l0) feet.
Sand and gravel material with cobbles was encountered in the test
holes at a depth of about four (4) to ten (10) feet to a depth of
about twenty-six (26) feet.
Test hole 1 was excavated in the bottom of an existing gravel
quarry area. The gravel quarry was about fifteen (15) deep. The
test hole log reflects the material exposed in the cut face of the
quarry excavation plus the track hoe test hole excavation. Test
holes 2, 3, 4, and 5 were excavated from the original ground
surface and did not encounter the maximum depth of gravel in those
areas.
P. O.
