Final slopz grades should not
exceed 2:1 in steepness, with 3:1 or ly:1 slopes being even better. In general,
tfle chances of successful revegetation increases as the percent slope decreases.
Sslall areas with slopes steeper than 3:1 are often unavoidable but should be
kzpt to a minimum.
During• gravel extraction any topsoil should be striped and stockpiled
for later use. T: .is soil material should be spread out over the areas to be
reseeded to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. IInderlying• material should be scai£ied to
provide a bond betwee:; substratum and topsoil. It is realized that not all areas
will be able to be topsoiled, however, as much area as possible should be covered.
4lithout topsoiling, revegetation success is unlikely.
Seeding preparation is probably the most important factor deterainiiig tl;e
' success in establishing permanent vegetative cover. Seed should be placed 4"
to 1 inch deep in a friable but firm seedbed. All seed must be covered. I7ri1-
ling the seed is preferred to broadcasting.
7ne Sal Conservaoon Service
©
is an agency of Ine
SCS-AS-t
10-79
D ep arwem of Agnc ull ure
