i , • • <br />1 <br />~; r~ <br />f <br />1~SA GRAVELLY CLAY LOAM, 2 to 5 percent slopes, Class IIIe Land (Me) <br />This soil is derived from old alluvium consisting mainly of materials <br />weathered from acid igneous and mixed igneous rocks, largely granite <br />and basalt, but includes smaller quantities of material from sand- <br />stone and shale. The alluvial mantle, for the most psrt,i ranges <br />from 5 to 8 feet deep but it is deeper in places. <br /> The 8- or 10-inch surface soil in cultivated fields is light brown <br />' when dry and brown when moist; its organic-matter content is very lou. <br /> the subsurface layer is light-brown or pale brown clr,~ loam containing <br />~ ' a considerable amount of cobblestones, rounded pieces of gravel, and <br /> chert fragments. Beginning at depths below 12 to 14 inches the sub- <br />' soil is very pale brown to reddish yellow and shows a considerable <br /> amount of white lime splotching. In a few places the sub- <br /> soil material is weakly c•<mented into s semihardpan. Generally, <br />' however, it is permeable enough to permit the downward growth of <br /> deep-rooted plants. <br />' <br /> Surface runoff is medium, and underdrainage is adequate. The excess <br />' of gravel, cobblestones, and stones makes workability less favor- <br /> able than on Mesa clay loam soils.
