Dear Mr. King:
This letter is written to reiterate your telephone
conversation with Susan Nall of this office on February 17; 1995,
regarding the Thomas Pit gravel mining operation on the Animas
River north of Durango. Additional information is requiredi to
complete the permit application that was assigned number
199475260.
As discussed by telephone, clarification is required i'or the
following:
1. Provide the open water surfaces areas (in square feet) for
the northwest corner of the permit area, the western dredgE: basin
(between station numbers 4+00 to 18+00), and the ditch and
settling pond for the sand wash plant. The northwest area was a
previous gravel pit that has been breached by the river and is
located between station numbers 20+00 to 26+00. This information
is necessary for consultation purposes with the Fish and Wildlife
Service on endangered species.
2. We understand that the method of mining occurs from they west
bank by use of a large backhoe, and that a discharge of dredged
or fill material is not placed within the river for the gravel
harvesting. The schedule for instream excavation is from
September to April. If these descriptions are not accurate,
please advise us.
3. Resubmit the cross-section drawings with a larger vertical
scale. This will provide more clarification during the public
notice process. We recommend one drawing per page.
4. Submit a cross-section diagram of the river near station
23+00 where the old gravel pit has become part of the active
channel.
