UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
• SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
422 East First St., Trinidad, CO 81082 5/18/82

Animas Coal Company
South of Trinidad
Trinidad, CO 81082
Dear Sir:
Attached are copies of map unit descriptions and a map with the soil _
sample area outlined in pencil. A good area for a possible source of
topsoil is outlined in blue. trcnn~~ ~ Nr~~r~~~ ~~
The area with large amounts of available topsoil is located on the
South side of the drainage, immediately west of a large refuse pile.
This area is dominantly Fort Collins loam (LfD)~with a small area of
Limon clay loam (C11C) along the drainageway. Soil depths range from
5 to 10 feet. The Fort Collins soil has a very shallow surface horizon
FO to 6") and a thick argillic B horizon (15-25 inches). These two
horizons should not be separated when stockpiled. The C horizons ave-
• rage 3 t0 7 feet thick. All C horizons r.an b2 Stockpiled together.
The Limon soil should be treated in a similar fashion. This Soil differs
from the Fort Collins in having a higher concentration of clay throughout
the profile, and having a thin camb is 8 horizon.
The north side of the drainageway consists of very shallow soils (Pj F)
except on ridge tops. These ririge tops average 20 to 30 inches in soil
depth. The dominant soil in ~.Luulicr area:, is Luuviers yrave Lly clay
loam. This soil is shallow over shale. there are numerous areas of
exposed sandstone and shale bedrock.
This area should not be disturbed if possible. Topsoil is very limited
and removal of vegetation would only irir:rease erosion of shallow soils.
If you have any questions or need additional information let me know.
Sincerely,
<~
r
~
d.~ .
st.
Lee A.
