Water-Quality
Water quality has been unsatisfactory on about five occasions in
five years when the NPDES limit of 0.5 ml/1 of settleable solids
was exceeded. The changes to the surface water system, described
above, and the planned addition of rip-rap in the collection
ditch should prevent future violations.
A very high TDS reading, 60,880 mg/l, occurred in July 1984. The
lab reported that suspended solids less than 0.54 microns passed
through the filter paper, and by test procedures, was calculated
as TDS. Lab personnel observed that four to five days elapsed
before the fines settled out of the lab sample.
The NPDES iron limit was exceeded during the 4th Quarter of 1984,
as was the high limit for pH. The limit far iron was also
exceeded on 5-22-84. Although some NPDES violations did occur,
the low frequency of violation and the water volumes in respect
to the total Raton Creek watershed precluded any significant
impact on downstream water qualities. Moreover, the corrective
measures employed to date, and those planned, should prevent
future violations.
•
173
