2.04.6 (2) (a> (v) NEAR SURFACE GEOLOGY OF SURFACE OPERATIONS
AND FACILITIES AREA
The surface operations and facilities area, essentially the
disturbed area, is underlain by the lower portion of the Verme~o
Formation. Lithalogically, the strata consist of interbedded
shales and sandstones and the Piedmont coal seam. The Piedmont
Seam is approximately thirteen feet below the Lower Starkville
Seam and has not been excavated. The Lower Starkville Seam is
the lowest seam to be mined.
The disturbed area has been filled with mine refuse from old
mining operations and from material derived from the face-up of
the Raton Creek Mines. The top of the fill roughly
coincides with the base of the Lower Starkville Seam.
The sediment pond is situated below the level of the Piedmont
Seam. Excavation of the Piedmont Seam was not required to
facilitate construction of the pond.

Revised 5/93
118
