DRAFT
. • • 11-75, AEA
• Sa---Nederland Cobbly Gravelly Sandy Loam, 0 to 3 Percent 8lopee
.
This is a deep, yell drained Boil on old high terraces end fans.
It formed in calcareous, gravelly and cobbly loaapr alluvium. The average
annual precipitation is about 15 Inches. 8lopee are nsarly level to
gently sloping. Included in this unit are small areas of Yelmont
cobb?y clay l.aam and Fenn clay loe~, all oa slopes of 0 to 3 ~ retnt.
Typically the surface layer is grayish brown, cobbly sandy loam
about 4 inche^ thick. The upper part of the subsoil ie brom cobbly sandy
loam about 6 inches thick. The middle part of the subsoil is a Drown
cobbly seedy loam about 8 inches thick and the loner part is light brown
calcareous, cobbly gravelly seedy loam. The substratum is calcareous,
cobblj., gravelly loam extending to 60 inches or more. Percent of cobble
ranges from 50 to 75 percent by volume.
Permeability is moderate. Effeotive rooting depth ie 60 inches or
more. Available eater capacity Sa moderate. Surface runoff is slow and
erosion hazards are slight.
This soil is used •lmoat entirely for grazing. Some small arae~
are used for building sites and roads. The large amount of cobble on the
surface and scattered throughout the profile limit the uses of this soil.
It is sot suited for cultivation.
Rangeland vegetation of this soil is typical of the cobbly foothills
range Bite conaisting mainly of Big blueatem, little blueatem, eideoata
grams, mountain mutely, blue grams, switch grass, winged buckwheat and
nnilwort. Proper grazing is needed to maintain quantity and quality of
desirable vegetation. Combinations of etockwater development, fencing
•nd deferred grazing help improve and maintain range condition.
Windbreaks and environmentsl plantings are difficult to establish
oa these soils. Limited available eater and the large amount of cobble
are the principal concerns in establishing tree and shrub pla~iage.
Special care, conaleting of summer fallow a year is advance of plant-
ing and supplemental rater, is needed to insure establishment sad aur-
viwl of plantings.
The large amount of cobble and large stones are the primary limit-
ing soil properties for building sites, urban development and roads.
Capability Subclass: VIIs.
Cobbly foothills Range Site.
i~Yd{a. ~
