•
page 3 4/14/87
Mr. Bischoff also noted that Co. Mined Lands Board may not be in existence
3 months from now whichmakes it even more imperativethat we take charge at
the county level, now!
Dr. Donald Reichmuth a consultant Hydrologist who visited Durango to
spearhead a workshop addressing the riverbank erosion problem in the Animas
Valle}! shook his head in exasperation when adjacent landowners explained
the current activities in a specific section of the river.
You can see, it is the genral consensus of these esperts that a river management
plain :is immediately needed. As I said before, if this shortsighted ruination
of thca river valley continues, we will all be reminded each time we drive
north out of Durango.
It is the responsibility of the county commissioners to gather as much information
as possible before appcoving the Sandco permit or any other mining permit. It
is obvious that this cannot be done in a weeks time. That is why, until with
the h~alp of the appropriate agencies,a plan is established-- You must cease
issua~~ce of any further mining permits along the Animas River.
I urg~a you to place an immediate moratorium on mining permits along the Animas
River.
Sibmitted and presented by
Lana .JO Chapin
11165 C.R.250
Durango, CO
247-1541
P.S. 'The offer is still open for any or all of you to come and see what
a mess is beingmade of the valley.
