Western Slope Carixm, Inc.
has been operating opal mines >n federal leases in the North Fork Valley
of the Glmnison River in Colorado since the caipany was incorporated in
1970. A map shaaing the relative locations of the propPSties is given
in Figure 1 (Lxaticei Map) .
The wal being mined Linder the existing operations reached a rate of
about 200,000 tons per year in early 1977. Because of the relatively
high ash content of the current product, the market value of Western
Slope Carbon's opal has been belay that considered to be profitable.
• Therefore, to realize profit, Western Slope Cathon intends to build a
coal cleaning facility with a capacity of about 500,000 tons per year.
Subject to satisfactory opal sales and goverrurental approvals, construction
of the surface facilities is expected to begin in mid 1978.
Western Slope Carbon understands that an increase in operations of this
mac~itude must be approved by various state and federal agencies.
