•
Mined Land Reclamation Board
1313 Sherman St., Rm. 215
Denver, CO 80203
• iiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiii
Laura Rossetter
PO Box 1505
Silverthorne, CO 80498
May 23, 1993
I am writing in regard to a recent application filing by Alpine Rock Company,
14802 W. 44th Avenue, Golden, Colorado for a permit to mine sand and gravel
on 352 acres in the Swan River drainage of Summit County, Colorado.
As a resident of Summit County, 1 am vehemently opposed to this proposal. I am
the author of The Mountain Bike Guide to Summit County, Colorado and have
spent a lot of time along the road which would access the area proposed for
Alpine Rock's operation. The road (Tiger Road) is only a few miles from
Breckenridge, Summit County's largest urban core. It is one of the closest and
most heavily used recreational routes near Breckenridge. Its scenic nature
and easy access makes it popular with mountain bikers, joggers, horsemen,
etc. A currently improved historic site and parking area (a historic dredge)
are located along Tiger Road. Trout Unlimited is currently working on
improving trout habitat in the Swan River, which is finally starting to
recover from years of abuse. Many people live up this road (most of them right
along its edge). An operation of this nature would require numerous daily
trips by heavy equipment and would totally ruin Tiger Road's use as a
recreational corridor. Area residents would lose any peace and quiet that
currently exists along this route. A commercial operation of this nature, in an
area currently used residentially and recreationally, is totally inappropriate.
Alpine Rock states its operation would benefit the local area in that it would
reduce the dredge piles remaining from the initial mining operations up this
drainage. We have learned to live with and accept these dredge piles in Summit
County. They bother us and affect much less than would a 20-year sand and
gravel mining operation. I really don't see where Alpine Rock's proposal can
he considered "reclamation." I think it would make this valley's situation
worse. This area's mining days are over and the Swan River Valley would see
many negative impacts (noise pollution, greatly increased traffic, loss of
recreational and residential value) from this operation. If you have any douhts
about the inappropriate nature of this operation, 1 invite you to visit the
proposed site before making a decision.
In conclusion, I urge you to deny the permit for the Alpine Rock Company
proposal.
Thank you for your time,
'~ELEIVEG
MAY 2 5 1993
~mision o, tvunera~s is neology
