Resource Description: This is a 400' long portion of the Fire Mountain Canal along the North Fork of <br />the Gunnison River. The ditch is a major waterway, approximately 24-30' wide and of unknown depth. <br />The ditch appears to be soli lined. It's prism is unknown due to water slow. Beyond the boundary of <br />the current Project Area a parshall flume and ditch rider's shack were observed but not recorded. <br />A description of the building of the canal was written by Wilson Rockwell and is entitled "Delta County: <br />• The Formative Years." It is undated but can be found in the Paonia Public Library. The entire canal <br />runs for 32 miles up and down the North Fork of the Gunnison River Valley serving farms and ranches. <br />It was constructed entirely by local people beginning in 1896. The canal begins about a quarter mile <br />west of the town of Somerset and ends on Roger's Mesa, about three miles west of Hotchkiss. Only <br />one segment (5DT7277.1) has been previously recorded. It is located immediately west of the current <br />Project Area in Delta County where the canal begins. It was recorded in July of 2000 by Carl E. <br />Conner of Grand River Institute. <br />7. Original use: Irrigation for the North Fork of the Gunnison River Valley <br />Current use: Same <br />8. Modifications fdescribel: In 1939, under Presidential Approval, the Fire Mountain Canal was enlarged <br />to carry water from the new Spring Creek Reservoir. During that construction, the old wooden flumes <br />and head gates were replaced, and the canal was widened and deepened. The canal is still in use and <br />is upgraded when necessary. <br />9. Extent of Resource: The canal begins about a quarter mile west of the town of Somerset and ends on <br />Roger's Mesa, about three miles west of Hotchkiss. <br />10. Associated Artifacts: None observed. <br />.1. Associated Features or Resources: Beyond the boundary of the current Project Area a parshall flume <br />and ditch rider's shack were observed but not recorded. <br />
