This segment is in excellent condition. The canal
segment runs through a concrete box culvert where the road from Bear Creek (running north
to south) crosses it. -
35. Vandalism: yes no XX describe:
36. National Register Eligibility Field Assessment: -
Eligible XX Not Eligible Need Data
Statement of Significance/N.R.H.P. Justification: Although the entire Fire Mountain Canal
System has not yet been officially determined eligible, a segment to the west of the Project
Area in Delta County 15DT1277.1) has been recommended field eligible under Criterion A.
That segment as well as the one located within the Project Area (5GN3711.1) should be
considered contributing elements to an eligible Fire Mountain Canal System. The canal system
-was constructed in 1896 and runs for 32 miles in the North Fork of the Gunnison Valley
serving farms and ranches throughout. The system was enlarged in 1939, under Presidential
Approval, to carry water from the new Spring Creek Reservoir. The segment within the
Project Area is recommended eligible under Criterion A because of its association in history
with significant state and local events, particularly local agricultural development.
37, Status in an Existing National Register District: N/A
Contributing Non-Contributing
38. National Register District Potential yes no XX discuss: The present segment is
not large enough and does not serve any of its end users in the current project area. Thus it is
a single segment and site. However, other portions of the ditch and the lands it serves could
• have the potential to be a rural farming cultural landscape based on the presence of the ditch.
