CONCLUSIONS
A Class III cultural resource inventory of approximately 1330 acres of the Elk Creek Lease
Exploration Project in Gunnison and Delta Counties was conducted by WCRM, Inc. on May 23-
24`' and July 9~', 20D1 for Oxbow Mining, Inc. The Project Area is located on federal and private
lands. It is situated north/northwest of Somerset, Colorado and will be directly and indirectly
impacted by drill site construction and road building and use. The survey was conducted so that
NRHP evaluations and recommendations could be made with regazd to cultural resources located
during the course of the inventory.
No cultural resources have been previously recorded within the Project Area. Two historic site
segments were recorded during the cowse of the pedestrian survey. A segment of the Fire
Mountain Canal (SGN3711.1) is recommended eligible under Criterion A as a contributing
element to a potentially eligible Fire Mountain Canal System. If this segment of the canal will be
disturbed, it is recommended that a thorough photo-documentation following BLM standazds
(bevel II) of the portion of the canal to be impacted be completed prior to impact. Also, a
segment (SGN] 66l .2) of the officially determined eligible D&RGW Railroad is also
recommended eligible under Criteria A and C as a contributing element to the railroad. It is
recommended that if the trestle will be impacted, a Level II (BLM standazds)~recording should be
completed before disturbance.
40
1

1

1
~~
