• Garfield, Gunnison, and Pitkin), The segment is located along the North Fork of the Gunnison <br />River, in good condition and in use, It is 80 feet wide and 400 feet long; the length of this <br />segment is defined by the length of the Project Area in this location. The dirt road running north <br />to south along Beaz Creek, as well as Beaz Creek itself, cross under the trestle before they <br />intersect with Colorado Highway 133. The trestle is approximately 100 feel in length and <br />composed of wood bents, stringers and a ballast deck. There is a pedestrian safety rail made of <br />cable and steel uprights attached to the trestle. The line is a standazd gauge rail line of <br />conventional construction. Construction on this segment was begun in 1902 with an extension to <br />Somerset with construction completed in 1906. <br />This segment of the surviving grade is a contributing element to the D&RGW Railroad System <br />which was officially determined eligible in 1988 for its association with the expansion of <br />railroads across the central Rocky Mountains beginning in the 1850s and continuing until the <br />1930s. This line extends from the Delta area to the Gunnison Valley and beyond. This portion <br />of the D&RGW played an important role in the development of Gunnison County and in the <br />regional development of coal and precious metal mining. As a result, this segment of the <br />D&RGW is recommended eligible as a contributing element under Criteria A and C. <br /> <br />37 <br />
