• Registration Requirements: Resources associated with this context should meet the
requirements outlined below to be considered as eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Properties
associated with this context may be evaluated under Criteria a, c, and/or d. The first registration
requirement is that the property had to have operated in a ranching related function for the
majority of the time between 1881 and 1944. The second requirement is that the physical
chazacteristics of the ranch must be present, specifically that the buildings be vemaculaz in style.
The individual buildings and structures must represent their condition, configuration and fabric
as they did when built to allow interpretation of locally practiced construction techniques.
Additions or modifications must not impair the quality of the historic fabric (design, materials
and workmanship) of the individual buildings, contributing buildings within a district or the
overall district. For the buildings to be considered significant under Criterion c their materials
and methods of construction must be consistent with the descriptions given above.
For a district to be eligible the key components of a faun or ranch must be present. Specifically,
there must be a main house, there must be associated animal caz structures such as a barn or
corrals, or agricultural structwes such as grain bins or machine sheds reflective of the type of
agriculture practiced at the farm or ranch. Finally, the district and/or contributing resources must
be at ]east 50 years old and for those structures and buildings not dating to the period of
significance, they must help interpret the evolutionary changes in methods or techniques in
ranching that took place. No NRIIP exceptions apply to this property type. The individual
buildings and the district must be in thew original location or thew location during the period of
• significance and the setting must be present to convey their historic feeling. If the individual
buildings have lost their ability to convey either their design, materials, workmanship, or
character/function within the district though natural deterioration or the activities of man.during
or after the period of significance, then those specific buildings shall be considered non-
contributing.. Resources will be considered significant under Criterion d if they can offer
important information pertinent to one of the reseazch topics discussed above and maintain their
archaeological integrity vis a vis their focus as defined in NRI3P Bulletin 36.
Property Type 1B: Irrigation System Resources (1880-1951)
SiQniTicance of the Irrigation System Resources: The significance of irrigation in the study
azea stems from the relationships of the resources to many of the major trends in the history of
the region and the development of its agricultural industries. Equally, many common
engineering and construction techniques are represented by resources associated with the various
water diversion systems of the region. Not all types of imgation features are represented by
resources in and near the present study azea. For example, the study area contains only a major
ditch and to date no remains of small, ranching related irrigation systems have been recorded.
The majority of the study area's agricultural heritage is tied to the availability of water for use in
growing forage and crops. Thus, like the farming and ranching property type, the irrigation
system properties aze intimately tied to and representative of the study aeea's agricultural heritage
of the past 140 or so yeazs. This Property Type is associated with the RP3 themes ]fisted above as
well as the Engineering Context theme of Imgation.
19
