A site inspection was completed by District Wildlife Manager Lonnie Brown on September 9, 2006.
The site is located approximately one-mile southwest of La Veta, CO., and is presently agricultural/rangeland
consisting primarily of a grass/forb community few shrubs and no trees of any type.
Wildlife in the area includes prairie grassland bird species, small mammals, and occasionally mule deer. There are
no known prairie dog colonies or T&E species. Wildlife impacts by the pit will be localized and minor.
The post site use plan is to utilize the mined area for a storage area for heavy excavation equipment; however, the
Division of Wildlife is concerned with noxious weed encroachment on disturbed lands in this part of Huerfano
County. This site should routinely be monitored and inspected for noxious weeds and control efforts should be
implemented immediately upon detection to limit their establishment.
"i'hank you fo`r the opporturitry to comment on"this gravel pit proposal. if you have any questions or requite
additional information please call DWM Lonnie Brown at (719) 989-1027.
Sincerely,
~•C ~~
AI Trujillo
Area Wildlife Manager

DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Russell George, Exeafive Direcor
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Jeffrey Crawfortl, Chair • Tom Burke, Vce Chair • Claire O'Neal, Secretary
Members, Robert Bray • Brad Coors • Ridc Enstrom • Richard Ray • James McAnaly • Ken Torres
Ex Olfido Members, Russell George and Don Ament
