Water Quality Considerations
• Mining in Zone V, the disturbed area, should not impact ~
the quality of either surface or ground waters. The
greatest threat to water quality is the increased sediment
load, which could be carried by runoff from the disturbed i
area. However, all runoff from Zone V cai11 be channeled
into the sediment control pond and will not be allowed to
reach Bolton Draw. Some seepage may occur from the pond
into the weathered bedrock aquifer. [dater in the
pond is derived from deeper aquifers penetrated by the
mine and from precipitation• It is expected to be slightly higher
in sodium and lower in TDS than the neaz surface waters sampled in
Well ~~2. Seepage from the pond will be minimal and
effects from such seepage will probably not be recognizable
• 700 ft. below the pond in Well ~E2.
As described in Section 779.15 and 779.16, four monitor
wells and two surface water ,monitoring sites will be
maintained. Through this monitor system, maximum and
minimum discharge conditions can be identified and any
seasonal variations in water quality will be documented.
This monitor program will be maintained throughout the
life of the mine to detect any quality or quantity changes
in either the surface or ground water regime as mining
progresses.
21
