4.2 GEOLOGIC OVERVIEW
4.2.1 Stratigraphy
The coal in the Permit Area (See Figure 4.2-1) lies in the
P4ount Garfield Formation of the Mesa Verde Group of Upper
Cretaceous Age. The Mount Garfield Formation consists of
buff and gray fine-grained and medium-grained sandstones and
gray shales. Although several coal seams occur in the upper
part, the thick, economic coals lie in the lower portion of
