PRELIMINARY DRAFT
7-76, AEA
' 87V and 87--Unnamed (Apex) Stony Sandy Loam - Rock Outcrop, 20 to 65 Slopes
' This is a complex of deep, well drained soils and rock outcrop
on steep and very steep wooded mountain slopes usually with north and
west exposures. The average annual precipitation is about 17 inches,
' frost free season is 70 to 125 days and mean annual temperature is
about 450 F. Elevation ranges from 6200 to 8000 feet.
The unnamed (Apex) soils make up about 50 to 65 percent of the area.
They are on mid slope and toe slope positions and are forming from mate-
rials derived from gneiss and schists.
' Typically the Unnamed (Apex) soils have brown stoney sandy loam
surface layers about 3 inches thick. The subsurface layer is a stony
sandy loam about 8 inches thick. The subsoil is a brown stony sandy
' loam about 15 inches thick. The substratum is a stony sandy loam
extending to 40 inches or more.
' Permeability is moderately rapid, available water capacity is
moderate. Effective rooting depth is 40 inches or more. Surface
runoff is moderate, water erosion is moderate. Soil reaction is slightly
' acid (pH 6.1 to 6.5).
The rock outcrop part makes up 15 to 25 percent of the total area.
' It consists of large boulders and exposures of bedrock mainly granite.
These soils are used for limited grazing, recreation and wildlife.
' Community Development - Slope and stony surface layers are severe
limitations where areas are considered for homesites and roads.
I
' Capability Subclass; Me.
Range Site: Not grazable.
' Woodland Group:
Hydrologic Group: B.
Note: 87V Unit located in higher elevations with mean annual temperature
737F.
1
i
