Climate
' The climate at Shaffers Crossing is generally colder
due to the higher altitudes in that region. Temper-
atures vary between the extremes of -40°F in the
winter and 100°F in the summer with the onrival
average being between 41°F and 45°F. Due to
' the altitude, however, temperatures may vary
' considerable at any given time. Temperatures tend
to corrolate well with the altitude although they are
also affected by seasonal changes and various air
' movements.
' Precipitation in the area is greatest during the months
of April and May with July and December following
close behind. Average annual precipitation is from
' 19 to 24 inches. During the winter months snow may
accumulate to depths of 30 inches or more which then
' melts and flows into the streams during the months of
' May, June and July.
In general, the summers tend to be mild while sub-zero
temperatures are common during the winter. High
humiity is rare and extremes in temperature are of
short duration. The frost free season is generally less
' than 75 days. Also, evaporation in the area is
' moderate.
