~J

Exhibit K -Climate Information
Climatic data for nearby towns with similar elevation and physiographic
characteristics are incomplete and of relatively short period of record. Mean annual
temperature was therefore derived by interpolation from data available for Parker 9E
(about 20 mi. NW of the mine site), and Limon 10SSW (about 30 mi. SE of the mine
site). The mean precipitation and other climatic data was obtained from Climates of
the States, Colorado, by Joseph Berry, U.S. Department of Commerce,
Climatography of the United States, No. 60-5.
The winters are relatively cold and dry and have extreme variations in
temperature. The summers are relatively hot and dry. The seasonal temperature
ranges from the 90'soF to a low in the -20's~F. The mean annual temperature is about
46.5~F. The mean minimum January temperature is about 8~F., and the mean
maximum temperature for this month is about 42~F. In July, the mean minimum
temperature is about 51~F and the mean maximum temperature is about 83oF.
The mean annual precipitation is estimated to be about 14.5 inches.
Approximately 70 percent of the annual precipitation falls between April 1st and
September 30tH. Snow occurs principally during the months of November through
March. The mean annual snowfall is about 70 inches and typically accounts for only
about one-third of the annual precipitation; although snow during the spring months
can amount to a significant amount of moisture in some years.
The frost-free period (daily minimum temperature higher than 32oF ranges from
about 63 to 125 days in length; the growing season for native plants is March through
September with the optimum growth period in the early spring and summer months.
-26-
