Our main concem is with both
well and ground water. We have a well, as do many of our neighbors. If Benson
Brothers are allowed to pump the quantity of water they say they will need for their
mining operation, what will that do to the water table that our wells or located in? As for
ground water, we are downstream from the mine location and are concerned about the
effect this operation could have on the quality of ground water flowing through our
property.
We have a great concern for the aesthetic effects of the proposed mine. Benson Brothers
plan to mine the ridge off a beautiful hill that is a landmark in the area and visual for
many miles. Not only will that be an eyesore to the community but could be hazardous
for the homes located at the base of that ridge.
Flooding has previously been a problem in that area when heavy rain fell in a short time
frame. If the natural valleys and ridges are mined off and the natural slope is replaced
with a larger area that has been reclaimed in a 2:1 ratio, as required by the Siate, this will
give and even larger area which will all drain off in one direction, leading to an even
greater threat of flooding.
As homeowners living in Coalby Canyon we wish to state our strenuous objections to this
operation and request that you deny this permit. We wish to be made a party to the
proceeding, we wish to be on the mailing list, and would like for apre-hearing
conference to be held in Cedaredge. Please have the pre-hearing conference include a
tour of the site to which all parties are included. Please schedule a hearing on the
application, for all the reasons stated in this protest, and set the hearing in Delta or Grand
Junction, a location convenient to the proposed project site.
Sincerely,
~~~~~ iiECEiVED
G~~,n~~~~„~,,~~ ~~ 09 X06
Oirision of Minereh end GeoloBY
