• R 10 and IOE. Bulkley clay loam rocky phase and Bulkley clay loam, 12 to 25
percent slopes. This is swell-drained soil formed in mixed channel deposited
alluvium (sand and gravel) often over residual shale on strongly sloping to
steep sideslopes at elevations within the permit area of 6,565 to 6,600 feet.
The sand and gravel outcrop material in Type RIDE occurs at the higher
elevations. Sand and gravel parent material thickness varies from 0 to more
than 60 inches. The present land use is rangeland.
Typically, the surface layer is very dark brown to black loam to silty clay
loam, about 6 to 9 inches thick. The rocky phase often contains 5 to 15
percent by volume gravel and cobble size fragments in surface, subsoil,
.and/or substratum. The upper subsoil is dark brown sandy clay about 5 to 19
inches thick. The lower subsoil is dark yellowish brown clay. The substra-
tum is yellowish brown sandy clay or clay to a depth of 60 inches or more.
•
u
The soil permeability is slow and the available water capacity is moderate.
The effective plant rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Surface runoff is
medium to rapid. The water and wind erosion susceptibility of this soil when
disturbed is moderate to high.
Single lift topsoil salvage will be limited to the upper 14 to 26 inches of
surface and subsoil material. This material exhibits the most favorable
organic matter content, pH, texture, structure, and saturation percentage
(Table I-5). This stripping depth range can be easily identified in the field by
color differences. The suitable material has a color of brown to black op-
posed to yellowish brown for unsuitable substratum or overburden material.
This soil type occupies 2.1 percent (2.0 acres) of the permit area and 2.1
percent (1.4 acres) of the proposed disturbance area. Approximately 2.3
acre-feet of suitable topsoil will be salvaged from this soil type.
7A. Savage silt loam, 0 to 3 percent slopes. This is a deep, well drained soil
formed in loess or alluvium on level to gentle sloping benches and fans at
elevations within the permit area of 6605 to 6620 feet. The present land use
is for agricultural cropland. Depth to sand and gravel is greater than 60
inches.
I-9
