~ III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII •
EXHIBIT I
SOILS
The 93.7 acre Mesa Sand and Gravel tract was traversed and intensively
surveyed in May 1980 and November 1981 to determine soil types and locate
soil boundaries. During the course of the survey, referral was made to the
1979 soil map drafted on 1:24,000 black and white aerial photographs, the
series and map descriptions, and the interpretation sheets supplied by The
USDA Soil Conservation Service (SCS), Steamboat Springs and Craig,
Colorado field offices.
All SCS map unit delineations were checked and verified. This was accom-
plished by sampling and describing the soils at representative sites and
delineating the like soils according to logical or workable mapping units by
relating the soils to land forms, topography, geology, vegetation, and visible
surface features.
• Soil boundaries were delineated on 1:17,600 scale black and white stereo
prints. These delineations were further refined in an office photo interpre-
tative study using a mirror stereoscope. The refined mapping was transfer-
red to a 1:2400 scale topographic base map by inspection.
Soils were described, sampled, and classified in the field using the proce-
dures of the National Cooperative Soil Survey as outlined in the Soil Survey
Manual (USDA, 1951) and Soil Taxonomy (USDA, 1975). Samples were col-
lected and described by horizon utilizing hand excavated pits to 36 inches
and angering to 60 inches. All sample locations are shown on Exhibit I-I.
All samples were analyzed by Agricultural Consultants, Inc., a Colorado
Analytical Laboratory in Brighton, Colorado. The complete soil parameter
list and the respective laboratory methods for Agricultural Labs, Inc. are
presented in Table I-I. Results of these analyses are listed by sample site
location number and soil horizon in Tables I-2 and I-3.
• Soil map unit delineations used within the permit area (Exhibit I-I) are quite
similar to those on the SCS soil map. Minor changes included delineating a
