For the record, I'm Rade Orell of the Reclamation staff,
presenting Nielson's Incorporated Cortez, Colorado application on
the South Barnes pit for special use, and as Mr. Rindahl said,
Nielsons is seeking a special use permit to mine sand and gravel,
gravel in La Plata county for the widening and overlay of the La
Plata county airport. The pit area is located in La Plata County
approximately 13 miles south-east of Durango, in a portion of
Section 2 Township 33 N Range 9 w. Its approximate elevation (is
of) about 6300 feet. It is situated in the Florita River drain-
age in a previously undisturbed area. The surrounding land use
is agricultural range land, grazing. The existing vegetation in
the area consists of big sage brush, western wheat grass, blue
gramma, and Indian rice grass. Approximately 8 acres will be
mined, (the) remaining 1.9 will be used as a processing and stock-
piling area and the batch plant will also be in this area. After
the topsoil is dozed and stockpiled the gravel will be removed
with front-end loaders and processed. The overburden is approx-
imately 2 feet and the gravel will be mined to a depth of 8 feet.
This will be a dry operation. The only water involved will be
used in dusting the road haul road, and the pit area is located
approximately 40 feet above the Florita River. The operator has
notified the Colorado Water Quality Control Division to make sure
that they... insure their approval. They will be using approx-
imately 20,000 gallons of water a day for the haul road, which is
