<br />INTRODUCTION <br />In May and June of 1984 an intensive cultural resource survey was completed <br />in a tract of land containing the proposed routes of alternate coal <br />transportation systems for Colorado Westmoreland's Orchard Valley Mine <br />near Paonia. Delta County, Colorado (Figures 1 and 2). The boundaries <br />of the study area were delineated by Colorado Westmoreland and were <br />designed to allow for coverage of all impact areas which might be <br />associated with eventual construction of any of the alternate systems <br />of transportation (Figure 2). Survey was completed by a two-pzrson crew <br />from Centuries Research, Inc., of Montrose under the direction of the <br />author. Survey was carried out under provisions of Federal Antiquities <br />Permit d2-Lu-175 which expires April 11, 1985. The area surveyed <br />includes ,.;,scions of Sections 24 and 25, of T135, R92W and Sections 29 <br />and 30 of R91W. Land ownership varies among the BLM, Colorado Westmoreland <br />and other private owners. <br /> <br />• <br />
