ABSTRACT
An intensive Class III cultural resource survey has been completed by
Centuries Research on behalf of Colorado 4lestmoreland in an area of
proposed coal transportation corridor alternatives near the firm's
Orchard Valley tiine at Paonia, Delta County, Colorado. The survey
tract contained approximately 250 acres and was located at about
6,500 feet above sea level on steep slopes amid pinyon and juniper
forests of the upper Sonoran life zone. No evidence of prehistoric
or historic Indian occupation was noted. Five historic EuroAmerican
resources were, however, recorded. These included an historic road
trace with associated archaeological features, a massive stone field
clearing fence and three historic house sites and farmsteads. Of
these five resources one site was considered to be insignificant. The
road trace and stone fence are believed to be eligible for inclusion
on the National Register of Historic Places. Two farmsteads may prove
to be eligible pending conpletion of further historical research. The
study tract thus evidences cultural resource sensitivity and it will
probably be necessary to develop a mitigation program for some resources
after potential impacts within the study area are identified.
•
