BoX 4362 <br />Pagosa Springs, CO 8117 <br />May 16, 1988 <br />~~~~ <br />IIIAY 2 ~ 19E6 <br />~IriE~ l.Af~i <br />After speaking to you last week about my reclamation plan on the <br />gravel site, I thought I should clarify as to what the state of <br />the pit is now in. <br />The ranch was unlived on since 1943 without any control of the <br />beaver population. In those forty years the course of Devil Creek <br />was changed many times in the proposed pit area. <br />We dug the creek back into its original channel last year and made <br />a dike for flood control on high water years on the west side. <br />This currently existing dike will be the east side of the pit, and <br />is not a result of the pit. On the west side of the pit there is <br />a sod bank three to four feet deep already existing, also from a <br />time when the creek took that course. While moving the Devil <br />Creek water course back over against the mountain, I had the <br />bulldozer scalp the willows off the now designated pit site in <br />order to bring it back to productive meadow. After clearing the <br />brush, I found there was not enough topsoil existing to reclaim <br />the area for pasture. Therefore, the decision was made to create <br />the gravel pit as a means for creating trout lakes. It has been <br />our vision to do trout farming here for a long time. <br />Except for the small area on the west side of Phase IV that is too <br />rocky to be good pasture that we've designated to store sand, the <br />rest of the pit will be inside of the already existing dike and <br />shoreline. <br />
