should he given to construction of the eoir+eyer system along the present
transportation corridor front the valley to the mine. This corridor already
contains a high:ny and power line, and the associated impacts. A conveyor
system here p:oul~l not increase impacts to wildlife greatly. It p+ould also
allot: the present undisturbed habitats to the east to remain unchanged and
available to wildlife.
The following considerations relate to tF:e proposed conveycr• from the
mine site to the railroad storage/loading facilities:
I. if constructed along the proposed route east of Stevens Gulch Road.
A. t4ovement of big game animals (deer and elk) across conveyor must be
provided at least every quarter mile and near established game tra ms.
Such passages must be a minimum of eight (8') high and twelve feet (12')
wide. Additional passages could be provided to take advantage of
existing terrain features (gullies, depressions, chanoes in slope, e*_c.)
B. Small openings at frequent intervals should be provided along the
conveyor to facilitate passage of smaller mammals, birds and other
wildlife.
C. Construction of the conveyor facility should be scheduled in the
period Aril - October to avoid the possibility of disturbing big
game animals during the critical winter period.
D. The maintenance road along the conveyor facility should be restricted
to required vehicle traffic only to minimize disturbance to big game
animals, especially during the fall and printer. The animals will
probably adjust to any possible sounds associated with the conveyor
system, but if the road is open to the public, the resulting vehicle
traffic would cause an additional disturbance factor resulting in
reduced utilization of the habitats adjacent to the facility.
Y-4
