C-Ol9-dlv Dear Idr. 1Ciaer • You have proposed a woody plant density standard of 85G stems per acre for the Coiowyo (dine. Further, you have proposes that a minimum of 26>o of the reclaimed slopes less than 5:1 would be designated shruo clump establishment areas wnere transpranting of mature shrub clumps ono/or direct seeding and transplanting of shrub seedlings would be employee. Ptesures to enhance estaolishment of seeding shrubs in the shrub c]ump estaalishment areas will include the use of direct haul topsoil and/or a moaification of the regular herbaceous seed mix (so as to reduce the coRyetitien between herbaceous species and seedling shrubs). -he Division has two remaining concerns. First, as you have observed, a standard of 1,006 woody sterns per acre has been reccncnended by the Division of Wildlife for reclaimed lands in Northwest Colorado. Given the scmewhat generalized nature of the shrub estaolisnment clan provided by Coiowyo and th_ lack of specific justification fnr the propose. 850 stem per acre stem density standard, the Division does not feel comforta:,:e in approving a woody density stanaard which is lower than that recemrer.dec by the 7ivision of Wildlife. Second, the plan indicates t.tct in some instances the regular seedmix will not t•e seeded in order to re•nuce herb aceeus competition. The Divisidn agrees that as alternative seed mix is warrantee. Fnformation should be submitted on the ~noaified seed mix ana seeding rate and the criteria which will ne applied in selecting areas which would not be seeded with the regular seed mix {acreaa?, slope, erosion control etc.}.
