Prior to extraction of sand and gravel,
the entire property was irrigated farmland which produced
cantaloupes and occasionally onions. As mining progresses,
the land area allocated to crops has decreased. The availabil-
ity of land for farming will continue to decrease and
agricultural activities will be suspended when it becomes
uneconomical to plant and produce crops.
Excavation began in the westernmost portion of the
property in 1962 and continued in an easterly direction
through 1968. In 1969 the manner of operation was modified
and mining began at the easternmost edge of the property (see
map Exhibit C) and has proceeded in a westerly direction.
Mining will be conducted in five stages so as to minimize
surface disturbances at any one time. The property will con-
tinue to be mined from east to west. Each stage will be
approximately five years in duration except for the last
stage which will be about a three-year stage. Each stage
will be followed immediately by a reclamation phase.
The pit is operated year-round (except during occas-
sional no-demand periods) by Valco, Inc. as a specification
aggregate supply. As operations begin on each mining stage,
the soils and overburden are removed and stored for future
use in seedbed preparation and in backfilling and grading.
5
