CHAPTER I: SUMMARY
Description of Highway Improvement
The proposed project provides for the reconstruction of most of State
Highway 133 in Delta and Gunnison Counties, from a point just west of Hotchkiss
to the intersection of State Highway 133 and the Kebler Pass road near Paonia
Dam, some 26 miles to the east. The highway would be inproved to a modern
and safe two-lane facility, meeting Secondary Road Standards.
With the completion in 1979 of a paved road east of Paonia Reservoir,
State Hiohway 133 will become a major link between the Aspen-Carbondale-Glen-
wood Springs area and the Hotchkiss-Delta area. Due to increased tourist ac-
tivity and the major activation of coal mines in the North Fork Valley, this
facility is expected to carry an average of about 7,000 vehicles oer day by
\/
1996.
The project will be an improved two-lane highway designed for 50 miles
per hour speed, with the exception of the Do Nothing segment of 0.6 mile in
Somerset. There will be one railroad separation and eight bridges. Most of
the right-of-way which will be acquired will he 100', except in Hotchkiss
where it will be 200'. In Section II, there is a possibility of interference
from steep cross slopes. If these areas are encountered, a 150' right-of-way
will be required. Relocating the highway away from the railroad and the Fire
Mountain Canal in the Bowie-Somerset area has been a major consideration dur-
ing the development of this project.
