• It would not serve the needs of the local residents of the
North Fork Valley east of the town of Paonia.
The construction would be quite expensive because long
stretches of new highway would involve steep hillside
construction.
P1ore than half of this highway would remain in the shade in
the winter time and create hazardous driving conditions.
The geology of the valley indicates very unstable rock along
this alternative. This location would be jeopardized by
landslide and rockslide problems.
Considerable vegetation and wildlife habitat would have to
be rernoved from the Corridor to provide for the highway.
It would also create a dual system of highway and parts of
the existing road would have to be maintained by the County.
Recommended Alternatives
Section III - Somerset
The Reconunended Route for Section III will start at Mile 18.0 (18.8 on
existing higho-aay) just west of Somerset and follow the existing roadway
through the town to t•lile 18.6 east of Somerset. The Oo Nothing Alternative
is being recommended through the town of Somerset. Some minor improvements
as suggested by the Gunnison County commissioners can be accomplished witnin
available roadway limits without purchase of any homes in Somerset. From
Mile 18.6 eastward, the Recommended Alignment will curve to the south and
follow the north bank of the river very closely in order to remain south of
the railroad tracks. At Mile 19.7, it will cross to the south bank of
the river and for a distance of two miles it will follow the south bank of
the river very closely. It will then cross to the north side at Mile 21.7
and join the existing alignment at Mile 21.9 (Mi]e 22.8 on existing highway)
• which is the eastern end of Section III.
