• River Plateau to the east, and the White River to the south. The climate <br />of the area is semi-arid with an average daily temperature of 44.2°F, and <br />average annual precipitation of 16-20 in. The study area is characterized <br />by extreme relief which is dissected by relatively narrow stream valleys. <br />Elevations range from 6,800 to 8,600 ft. <br />Yegetation of the area is typical of northwestern Colorado and primarily <br />consists of agricultural bottomlands (pasture), big sagebrush (Artemisia <br />tridentata), serviceberry (Amelanchier utahensis), oak (Quercus gambelli) <br />shrublands, and aspen (Populus tremuloides) forests. Vegetation pattern <br />varies in response to elevation, relief, soil development, and historical <br />impacts of domestic and wildlife utilization. Wildlife species composition <br />of the region (Table 1-1) is characteristic of that associated with the <br />Rocky Mountain Forest Province as described by Bailey (1980). <br />• <br />• <br />1-3 <br />
