• reaches of Wilson Creek, Good Spring Creek, and the West Fork of Good
Spring Creek near its confluence with Good Spring Creek. In addition,
reaches of Good Spring Creek within the proposed affected area may contain
rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri), at least seasonally (BLM 1981). Axial
Basin Reservoir (approximately 20 surface acres) is located approximately
4.5 miles downstream (north) of the northern boundary of the proposed
affected area and is stocked with rainbow trout and several warm water
species including black bullheads, sunfish (Lepomis spp.), yellow perch
(Perca flavescens), channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), and crappie
(Pomoxis spp.). Although limited due to generally poor habitat quality,
the potential for the occasional occurrence of one or more of these stocked
species exists within the mainstem of Good Spring Creek. James Creek, a
tributary of Good Spring Creek has also been stocked with brook trout
(Salvelinus fontinalis) by CDOW (Madison 1984). Therefore, this species
may also occur in Good Spring Creek. No evidence exists that regionally or
locally significant game or nongame fisheries exist anywhere within the
proposed affected area.
•
4.7 OTHER SPECIES
Information concerning the status, relative abundance, and habitat
preferences of other vertebrates within the region encompassing the
Danforth Hills study area is summarized in Appendix B. Nongame species
which are not listed as threatened, endangered, or species of high federal
interest appear in Appendix A, and are briefly described below.
Nongame Birds
The Colorado Latilong Study (Kingery and Graul 1978) indicates that the
Craig Latilong, which includes the study area, provides habitat for 198
species of birds, many of which are nongame species. Species which are
most frequently observed within the study area during the breeding season
include the killdeer (Charadrius vociferus), common flicker (Colaptes
auratus), yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius), western kingbird
• (Tyrannus verticalis), Say's phoebe (Sayornis saya), Hammond's flycatcher
(Empidonax hammondii), western wood peewee (Contopur sondidulus), horned
4-33
