• Hunting for rabbits (primarily Nuttall's cottontail [Sylvilagus nuttallii]
and desert cottontail) may occur within the study area, but is probably
limited due to limited access to private lands and by the extreme
topography which characterizes the area. As a result, the area would not
be expected to contribute significantly to the regional harvest of small
game mammals. Other predator, forbearer, and small game species which are
harvested within unit 16, and which could potentially be taken within the
study area are listed in Table 4-4; including the coyote, bobcat (Felix
rufus), red fox (Vulpes vulpes), mink (Mustela vision), and raccoon
(Procyon lotor).
4.3 WATERFOWL
Waterfowl habitat within the proposed affected area consists of second,
third, and fourth order perennial streams, associated beaver ponds, and
wetland vegetation. This habitat occurs within the lower reaches of the
West Fork of Good Spring Creek (Sections 28 and 29, T3N, R93W), along the
• East Fork and mainstem of Wilson Creek, and along the mainstem of Good
Spring Creek. Within the proposed affected area, this habitat consists of
approximately nine linear miles of waterfowl habitat.
Beaver ponds occur primarily in the East Fork of Wilson Creek and the West
Fork of Good Spring Creek. Both of these streams are deeply incised and
were heavily impacted by heavy, rapid spring runoff during April-May 1984.
As a result of this spring runoff, many beaver ponds were filled with silt
and numerous beaver dams were breached; remaining ponds vary in size from
.1-.5 ac. These streams are 1-3 ft in width and less than two ft deep in
most areas. Stream banks are unstable and streambeds are generally covered
with sediment. Riparian and wetland vegetation is poorly developed with
the exception of a palustrine emergent wetland (approximately 2 ac in
extent) which occurs in Section 29 (T3N, R93W) along the West Fork of Good
Spring Creek.
Waterfowl habitat on the mainstems of Wilson and Goodspring creeks consists
. of perennial streams 3-5 ft wide, and generally less than three ft deep. A
deciduous forested wetland of approximately .8 ac in size and dominated by
4-19
