• During the archery and muzzle-loader hunting seasons (September-October),
aerial telemetry surveys were completed twice weekly to assess the impact
of hunting activities on the movements of elk. Additional details
concerning methods employed during aerial and ground telemetry surveys are
available in the Meeker PRLA Elk Baseline and Monitoring reports (CDM
1984a, 1985a, 1985b).
On May 1, 1984, sagebrush-dominated areas within the study area were
searched during the first two hours of daylight in an attempt to locate
sage grouse strutting areas. A Bell Jet Ranger helicopter manned by a
pilot and three observers was used to conduct this search. Sagebrush-
dominated areas were searched systematically at an altitude of
approximately 50 to 75 ft above the ground. Air speed ranged between 15
and 25 mph, depending upon topography and flight conditions.
Locations at which sage grouse, blue grouse, and waterfowl were seen during
foot and horseback searches of the study area were mapped and descriptive
• notes of each observation were recorded.
Observations recorded during 1983-1985 ground and aerial surveys of the
Danforth Hills study area were compiled on summary maps. These maps were
compared to WILDRIS mapping (CDOW) and other sources of information
concerning wildlife distribution. These summary maps and comparisons with
existing information formed the basis for delineation of the seasonal
distribution of game species within the study area.
Existing information concerning the status of harvest of predators and
furbearers was compiled from existing data sources (Bissell 1978, CDOW
1983). This information was complemented by sightings recorded during
ground and aerial surveys of the study area completed during 1983-1985.
3.4 WATERFOWL
Waterfowl observed during field surveys were identified whenver possible,
• and each sighting was mapped. A list of all species encountered within the
study area was compiled based on sighting records. A list of all waterfowl
3-6
