and unavoidable with regard to the existing vegetation.
Crushing, conveying, dumpiAg_ and hauling will produce
dust that may settle on plants and cause a reduction of
photosynthesis. This impact is minimal especially if dust
suppression practices are followed. Fugitive dust will be
produced as long as the project continues but should not
be a problem for the surrounding vegetation.
Mitigation of surface disturbances will involve a two-step
process . The first requires grading, smoothing and shaping
the mined areas into the necessary forms. Topsoil must be
spread over .these surfaces prior to their preparation as
proper seed beds . The second aspect is to initiate a
• revegetation program. Revegetation will be done primarily
with native species in order to establish a plant community
which can thrive on available precipitation.
Surface disturbances , as a type of impact , can be reduced
by careful reclamation and revegetation programs. Vegetation
recovery times can be reduced by improving the substrate by
adding topsoil and also by replanting native species character-
istic of surrounding sites . Mitigation by reclamation and
revegetation is a very useful tool for minimizing impacts
• caused-by surface disturbances .
F-18
