~~3 ~ ~b) -
FxG .~. 1 2 i l 36
76--Pinon-Bowdish-Rock outcrop complex, 3 to 30 percent slopes.
this map unit .is on mesas, benches, and escarpments. The native
vegetation is mainly pinyon pine and Utah uuniper. Elevation is 5,400
to 6,800 feet. The average annual precipitation is 10 to 14 inches,
the average annual air temperature is 46 to 48 degrees F, and the
.average frost-free period is 110 to 130 days.
This unit is 30 percent Pinon loam, 25 percent Bowdish loam, and
'/.5 percent Rock outcrop. The Bowdish soil occurs where the sagebrush
and grass understory are thicker. Rock outcrop makes up as much as 35
to 40 percent of some mapped areas
The components of this unit are
so intricately intermingled that it was not practical to map them
~;eparately at the scale used.
Included in this unit i5 about 5 percent Progresso soils occurring
under more open grass-shrub areas, 5 percent soils that are similar to
these Pinon and Bowdish soils but have greater than 35 percent rock
fragments in the control section, 5 percent soils that are similar to
these Pinon and Bowdish soils but lack a calcic horizon, and S percent
variable Ustic Torriorthents occurring in areas ~•~ith thicker
understory. Also included are small areas of Barx soils and Paradox
soils occurring on alluvial fans.
The Pinon soil is shallow and well drained. It formed in residuum
~;erived dominantly from interbedded sandstone and shale. Typically,
the surface layer is brown loam about 5 inches thick. The underlying
~~~:aterial to a depth of 16 inches is pinkish white foam. Hard
sandstone is at a depth of 16 inches. In some areas the surface layer
is gravelly loam, gravelly sandy loam, sandy loam, or cobbly loam.
/~ zy~
~/ ~...
